DIRECTOR, REGIONAL EMERGENCY AGENCY, LOMBARDY, ITALY
Since 2008, Dr. Alberto Zoli has served as the Director of the Azienda Regionale Emergenza Urgenza (AREU), the centralized agency overseeing all EMS and hospital emergency services for the region of Lombardy, Italy. Previously, he held the role of Medical Director at the University Hospital of Lecco (2003-2008) and the Niguarda Ca ‘Granda University Hospital in Milan (2000-2003). Dr. Zoli has played an important role in the development of Italian emergency medicine on both the regional and national levels, participating in technical workgroups and/or spearheading a variety of initiatives such as the implementation of a single emergency number, the development of intra-hospital quality assurance systems / clinical pathways, and the restructuring of the national and regional emergency systems in the interest of providing continuous quality of patient care. Dr. Zoli is responsible for launching and extending, to the whole Lombardia Region, the Emergency Number 1-1-2, the EU emergency number that is reshaping the approach to emergency services. Based on three Single Response Centers (CURs), according to the European Directive, the “Lombardy model” was indicated by the Italian Government, as the model for the extension of NUE 1-1-2 in Italy, and AREU as a reference for the implementation of 112 throughout the national area. Dr. Zoli is dedicated to education in both healthcare management and clinical emergency medicine; he regularly teaches at the university and regional/national health system levels and has lectured at over 200 conferences. Dr. Zoli completed his medical degree and a residency in hygiene and preventive medicine at the University of Bologna. He has authored 80 scientific publications.
